Gymnasium Nordenham is a secondary school that teaches about 850 students from year 5 to 13. We are an inclusive school, which also encourages the education of students with disabilities. There are about 70 teachers aiming to prepare students for university entrance by giving them the general qualification „Abitur“, examined at the end of year 13. Gymnasium Nordenham is located close to the North Sea. Our school is situated in the city center of a small town and in close proximity of the banks of the river Weser.
From year 5 to 10, our students usually have classes from 7.45 to 13.10 (six lessons of 45 minutes each). In the afternoon, there are several voluntary activities, such as theater, sports, musics, gardening, technology, chess or homework tutoring. Up from year 11 the students usually also have classes in the afternoon (2 lessons of 45 minutes each).
Beginning in year 5, all our students learn english as a first foreign languange as well as french, spanish or latin as a second foreign language starting in year 6. In year 11, there is a possibility to start learning a third foreign language (french, spanish, latin). During their last two years of school, students can focus either on languages, arts or sciences, which means that they have classes on an upper level in the chosen subjects. Besides, there is a special music class in year 5 and 6 that offers our students the possibility to learn a wind instrument (such as flute, saxophone or trumpet) and play in the school’s orchestra.
Since 2016 our school is a so-called Schule ohne Rassismus – Schule mit Courage (school without racism – school with courage). Both the students and the teachers are interested in not only facilitating tolerance but also enhancing sustainability in school and society. That is why we also decided to become an Eco-School one year ago. For this purpose we started a school garden and a bee-keeping project.
Our classes often host exchange students from different countries and integrate them into school life. We are looking forward to coming project and are happy that we can work together with students and partner schools from different countries.
