Our school is located in Modica, a town of about 60,000 inhabitants, the students’ families have an average standard of living.
Our high school “Istituto Superiore Giovanni Verga” is a secondary school of about 1150 students (aged 14-18) with both local
and ethnic origins and about 150 teachers. The school has six different courses: Foreign Languages, involved in this project,
Human Sciences, Music Course, Dance Course, Social-Economic as well as a smaller Carpentry school and a smaller Social-
Sanitary Technical school. We encourage all our students to take part in extracurricular projects that deal with local associations
and organisation as trainees. Of these many activities some have been linked to learning how to be eco-friendly – like creating
recycling activities and recycling bins in the school. The school is situated in the south-eastern area of Sicily in the province of
Ragusa, Italy. This area is currently affected by immigration from Africa via the Mediterranean Sea. In the morning we have
regular lessons in the different courses of the school, and in the afternoon we hold specific and specialized lessons for each of
the courses, such as Language certificates (Cambridge, DELF, DELE, etc.), ECDL (European Computer Driving License) for
students and teachers. The key people who will be running the project are Mary Puccia (English teacher) and Ursula Bünger
(German teacher). Our motivation in taking part in this project is obviously the fact that not only is our school located on an
island, Sicily, in the Mediterranean Sea, with a history that goes back into the depths of time. In particular, our area is
surrounded by splendid fine light-coloured sandy beaches, natural habitats for both flora that can be traced back to ancient
times and fauna of various species that often stopover in different areas of our island during their migration, particular types of
agricultural products renowned all over the world as is the Italian cuisine, protected areas within UNESCO sites such as Mount
Etna with its characteristic history, the Baroque architecture, etc. Our school also takes part in many initiatives to protect the
environment and to promote the beauties of our area and island to tourists from all over the world. Italy and even more Sicily are
tourist destinations for whoever wants to go back into history. Here anyone who comes to visit can go back in time to visit the
ancient ruins of Greek and Roman temples and theatres. In fact, our students from the Foreign Language course have often
created and participated in activities connected with tourism. There are also many associations and organisations with which our
students collaborate to practice and learn how to promote the island of Sicily to people who are interested in our area.
Furthermore, the pursuit of global environmental sustainability is another important factor that we try to integrate in all our
activities.
