project meeting IN GREECE 03/10-08/10/2022
In October 2022 it was the turn of Rethymno in Greece to host the partners and continue researching the project of sustainable tourism.
On Monday 3rd October all six teams gathered at Arsanio School and after the official opening greeting by the principal of the Greek school and the coordinators, they presented how history and local culture are affected by tourism in each country. For the week the students were divided in four teams (Warriors, Minoans, Dolphins, Rebels) and were given certain tasks to work on and present on Friday. Afterwards, they learnt about games in ancient Greece which are played until our days, they went on to practice them and got to know each other better in a fun and enjoyable way. The day closed with local dances from all countries and Greek syrtaki.
Tuesday 4th October was a full day. The group had a walk on Rethymno Riviera, visited Aquila Porto Rethymno- a sustainable all inclusive resort, had a tour of Rethymno through a treasure hunt organized by the Greek students and tasted local Greek cuisine. In the afternoon they had an amazing workshop by a local NGO (Archelon) and had a chance to participate in excavating and studying a Caretta Caretta sea turtle nest on Rethymno beach.
On Wednesday 5th October the group had an insight on the effects of tourism in preserving modern and ancient history through visiting Arkadi Monastery, famous for its holocaust and Greek revolution for the independence of Crete and Eleftherna archaeological site and museum which verifies Homer’s descriptions of life in Odyssey and Iliad.
Thursday 6th October was dedicated in ancient history again by visiting Knossos which is the biggest Minoan city and most visited site by tourists in Crete. The beautiful guided tour was followed by a visit to the Arcaeological museum in Heraklion which is full of ancient treasures and murals from the Knossos palace.
On Friday 7th October the students worked with their groups to discuss their findings on the project and afterwards presented their ideas on tourism and sustainability of history as they experienced it all week. The day closed with presentation of local Greek dances and giving the attendance certificates to all participants by the local authorities of Rethymno.
Saturday 8th October started with the evaluation of the mobility week and later it was dedicated to walking and exploring the local touristic area around the school and finished with games on Skaletta beach.
Sunday 9th October was the end of a rich in memories and feelings week and the time to say goodbye to friends who we shared with so much!
